Task 2 : Visual Analysis & Ideation

1.LECTURE

[ Lecture 6 / Visual Analysis ]

Phase 1 : Observation

Design vision is a responsibility, visualize it and understand it and tell you everything. You see the emotional meaning of the drawn drawing, but you don't see it.

Phase 2 : Analysis

You can explore how to integrate visual assessment into your development activities by addressing assessment issues and conducting task assessments based on relevant evidence.

Phase 3 : Interpretation

Summarize and analyze design work, linking it to relevant resources.

2.Module Brief

3.Practise

below is the artwork I had chosen from task 1 and followed by task 2 visual analysis writeup:

RECAP OF TASK 1:

(fig.1)

title:Joker poster
Year:2024
Size:unknown
Medium:movie
Phasa 1: Observation

This is a promotional poster for the movie *Joker*. It depicts a social environment full of apathy, extreme economic inequality, and widespread violence. The male character takes center stage, and his makeup suggests a character suffering from mental illness and rejected by society. This image fits into the overall oppressive atmosphere of the poster. The color palette is mostly black, but a ray of light shines through the center, symbolizing hope, or, conversely, growing dissatisfaction with a society that has become a haven for crime. Apart from the text, the poster is very simple, but has a very sad feel. The background is black, while the protagonist's costume is red and green, creating a stark contrast that emphasizes his isolation and inner turmoil.

Phasa 2 :Analysis

The entire poster features an asymmetrical composition, with strong contrasts, creating a sense of central focus. The male character sits on a chair, facing the viewer, and his face is painted with Joker makeup, which piqued the viewer’s interest. The linear light projection adds a dynamic flow, drawing attention to the central figure and keeping the viewer’s attention on the Joker. This design emphasizes the main point of the poster, creating a sense of visual expansion.

Two silhouettes are illuminated in the background: a man locked in a cage and a woman standing outside. Although this image reflects the darkness of society, it does not disrupt the balance of the poster. On the contrary, it enhances the overall harmony of the composition. The Joker, along with the man and the woman, represents people trapped in an oppressive social environment. This design emphasizes the theme of unity and solidarity in such conditions.

The intricate patterns on the Joker’s face have a symbolic meaning, representing not only the character himself, but also those who are considered “clowns” or ostracized by society. The text and images of a poster play a key role in enriching its content and preventing it from appearing monotonous. Large English words emphasize the main theme, while small words provide additional context, add depth to the story, and make the poster interesting and thought-provoking.

Phasa 3 :Interpretation

This poster serves as a contextual explanation for the movie “Joker,” which is set in a time of social unrest, economic inequality, and moral decay. The massive wealth gap, cold social violence, and government inaction are reflected in the oppressive atmosphere and dark background of the poster. The character design is based on the background of the protagonist: a male protagonist who suffers from a serious mental condition that causes uncontrollable laughter, and faces rejection and ridicule. His desire for social acceptance eventually leads him to despair, which mirrors the characteristics of the Joker. The film portrays the oppression and despair of society in a dark tone, with warm tones symbolizing violence, reflecting the overall style of the poster. After seeing the poster, one immediately understands the emotional tone that the film is trying to convey.

Symbolism

  • Joker:The state of mind of public figures is then just as important as the state of mind of the male hero himself.
  • Background: The black background represents an oppressed environment, a lifeless and suffocated society.
  • Light: It conveys a longing for hope, but hope that has been dashed, creating a stark contrast to the poster’s depressing mood.

    1 idea

    (fig.2)
    Description & Rationale:

    • Add relevant plot elements:
It is a dark black background and covers a very large area. Using imagery in a story makes an image more powerful and engaging, capturing the reader’s attention. Set against a black background, these cut into the central part of the male protagonist, and also contribute to the cohesion of the overall production.

    2 idea

    (fig.3)

    Description & Rationale:

    • Add character silhouette:
Place the clown silhouette on a white background, adjust the opacity to highlight the clown properly. This would give the image of the Joker more power, blur the background and make it more complex, and make the movie more emotionally expressive. Once the background is applied, although the color may create a lack of contrast, it does not distract from the male protagonist’s status. Instead, it improves the overall performance.

    3 idea

    (fig.4)

    Description & Rationale:
    • Enhance the title:
The Joker is the hero in the poster, and the title reflects the Joker's point of view. By replacing the Joker's image with the title, it doesn't distract from the title or make it easier to read. The combination of the title and the Joker image creates unity and cohesion, improves readability, and creates a unique experience.

    Task 2 Reflection:

Overall, this episode is very interesting. Through this, I learned a lot about design and gained a deeper understanding of Task 1. By studying Task 2, I further explored the principles of design. By analyzing areas that need improvement in the work, you can make the work more perfect. This task taught me that design work is not perfect from the beginning; Progress towards perfection requires frequent improvement.

    FEEDBACK:

In class, the teacher gave me feedback on my design. Since this part required a sketch, and I used Photoshop for the design, I revised the design plan accordingly. The teacher thought my knowledge was on the right track and presented ideas that fully reflected my research and understanding in the field of design.
