Task 1 :Exploration

1.LECTURE

[Lecture 0 / Introduction to Elements & Principles of Design]

  • Visual communication is designing by conveying useful information.
Elements of Design:

  • Point
Dots are relatively simple elements in design, and repeated use will produce different visual effects.
  • Line:
Lines can be either dynamic or static. They can indicate direction or describe the direction of light and shadow on an object.

  • shape:
Shapes are closed areas made up of lines. Some are two-dimensional, some are three-dimensional.
Different shapes convey different psychological impressions and are widely used in design.
  • form:
The shape mostly exists in three-dimensional space, with volume contour and structure as the main components. It is widely used in many fields such as architectural plastic product design.

  • texture:
In visual communication, texture refers to the tactile quality of a surface. Texture can be conveyed through visual or tactile means and is one of the essential elements in design. Different textures represent different emotional impressions and psychological effects. In design, texture is used to enhance realism, guide attention, and more.

  • space:
Space contains everything and reflects internal characteristics such as direction, depth, rhythm, balance, and difference. Each photo captures and captures the essence of a place.
  • colour:
In design, color can express emotional feelings through changes in light, warmth and cool, and color tones. Beautiful colors often attract people, and color combinations can also express emotions.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
  • contrast, balance, emphasis, rule of third, repetition / pattern /rhythm , movement , hierarchy, alignment, harmony, unity, proportion.

[Lecture 1 / Contrast & Gestalt Theory]
  • contrast:

The purpose of comparison: To enhance the effect, organize the information. The main idea of comparison is to avoid working in areas that are too similar.

Strong contrast creates a dramatic effect, while the lack of contrast creates a more uniform and flat image.

In different situations, the use of comparisons can have different effects. In ordinary writing, comparisons are used to justify the content. In art, contrast is made through color and space. There is a great contrast in
images of bright, black and white, warm and cold colors.

  • Gestalt theory :
It emphasizes that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
It affects the way we think, it shows how the human eye sees things, and it shows how difficult things can be. Not alone, but hard.

1.Principle of similarity:

Our eyes look for similarities in a picture or design; despite the distance, our perceptions intuitively connect and relationships are formed.

2.Principle of continuation:
Our eyes extend the lines and paths of the design through our own perspective, imagining the relevant elements and understanding the intended message within.
3.Principle of closure:
We are drawn to perfect images, but in everyday life we encounter a lot of imperfect images. Our brain, guided by meditation, fills in the missing parts, thus completing the missing parts in our minds.
4.Principle of  proximity:
Placing related patterns together and separating unrelated patterns creates a connection between similar patterns. This technique helps provide a structured sequence in our designs, making our goals more concrete.
5.Principle of figure / ground:
There is a contradiction between near and far, where the foreground stands out or the background takes center stage. An image may show two or more different shapes, but it conveys a central theme.
6.Law of symmetry & order:
Symmetrical objects are perceived as easily associated with the subject, while symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns readily blend into each other.

[ Lecture 2 / Balance & Emphasis ]

When you look at a picture, it can look interesting and appealing because it shows contrast. This is done by dividing the visual field to communicate. Balance is not based on symmetrical values; it is also affected by asymmetrical elements.
1.Symmetrical balance:
Dividing a design in half will result in equal weight on each side. Balance is achieved by finding the horizontal or vertical midpoint. While the center point is the axis, radial symmetry also ensures balance.
2.Asymmetrical balance:
This creates an uneven visual sense of weight, perhaps enhancing visual acuity on one side and acting as a distraction on the other. Such designs appear more robust and offer more flexibility in comparison.
3.The golden ratio :
The golden ratio is a mathematical concept, and designs based on this principle provide a sense of visual comfort and create a beautiful balance that soothes the mind.

4.Rule of thirds:
This reflects the design of many things. The image is divided equally into thirds horizontally and vertically, with important images placed at the intersections of these lines or formed on one of the lines..

5.Emphasis:
It can be utilized in every design to emphasize the dominance of color, shape, objects, and more.

[Lecture 3 / Repetition & Movement]

1.Repetition
Repetition is an important design element that brings life to a work of art, gives it rhythm, and avoids the effects of monotony that can bore viewers.

2.Movement:
The fluidity of design, through the extension of lines, compels our vision to follow, tracing the path as it unfolds. It primarily manifests in visuals through shapes, forms, lines, and the like.

[Lecture 4 / Harmony & Unity ]

1.Harmony:
Coordination and diversity are interdependent; Harmony refers to design elements that are in harmony with each other and express the same concept, situation, or emotion.

2.Unity
It involves the repetition of specific elements, these elements - such as form, color, or theme - maintain a single image and express a coherent theme, playing an important role in the design process.

3.Scale and proportion
Size-based modeling involves knowing the dimensions of objects in order to create large-scale models. It can make for excellent works of art.

[Lecture 5 / Symbol, Word & Image]

1.Symbol
It is used to illustrate events, to convey information that was intended to be conveyed in a story, and it can also include illustrations and stories.
These symptoms are divided into symptoms and symptom models.

2.pictorial symbol
It is a simple portrait that reduces elements used in different situations and combines them into a single frame, resulting in a meaningful and intensive work.

3.Abstract Symbols
It represents an object described with minimal detail and simplicity, yet still able to effectively convey its associated meaning.

4.Arbitrary symbols
The meaning conveyed by a symbol is very different from the meaning conveyed by the object. Many symbols have meanings based on their colors and basic shapes.

5.Word and Image
The right combination of text and images is crucial as it can deepen the meaning associated with the design. The right font can make an impression. They are used to convey information and ideas, to clarify the subject at hand.

[Lecture 6 / visual analysis]

Phase 1 : Observation

Please understand and understand the role of vision in construction and explain in your own words. Pick out the emotional meanings you see in the paintings.

Phase 2 : Analysis

When reviewing the design process and developing a use case based on relevant evidence, we can consider whether or not visual inspection can be included.

Phase 3 : Interpretation

Summarize and analyze engineering work, communicate and engage with appropriate extensions.

2.INSTRUCTIONS

3.Exercise : Understanding Design Principles:

1.Gestalt Theory:

It connects and interacts with our thinking, which determines how we group similar objects together and helps us form more complex visual images. It automatically processes visual information in the brain and organises it into units.

This image reflects the belief that its theme is "Beauty and the Beast". At first glance is the animal, which is in black, but the black patches highlight its beauty. Looking at the empty spaces, a small object begins to appear. It uses the principle of spatial organization, where our brain automatically recognizes two or more different objects.

2.Contrast:

The use of strong color contrast emphasizes the desired design theme, which is also important for attracting the attention of the audience. Different comparisons affect different thoughts and feelings.

Red and green are two of the strongest colors. The handle is set against a green and green background, making it eye-catching. The vibrant colors of red and green are the focal point of the entire photo, drawing attention towards the subject at hand.
3.Emphasis:

The visual center plays an important role in your design, which helps you communicate the value and limitations of the information you’re presenting. Putting the highlights in the visual center will help you convey your message effectively.

At the end of a busy zebra crossing, a yellow umbrella stands out, revealing its color. When the crosswalk is raised, it draws attention and makes the focal point more effective.

4.Balance:

In works of art and design, the different distribution of visual weight creates a balance that provides visual comfort and aesthetic pleasure. There are two types of equilibrium: symmetric equilibrium and asymmetric equilibrium. They can also be combined to achieve a healthy and balanced state.

The design shows the sun and moon as symmetrical shapes, with the moon having dark colors and the sun having light colors. This creates a balance in visual weight that gives a feeling of comfort. This design shows the balance of balance, by perfectly using the contrast between light and dark colors, making the balance of balance clearly visible.

5.Repetition:

It refers to the repetition of certain elements, elements of which are available (such as shapes, colors or textures), in order to maintain a consistent appearance and present a unifying theme, which plays an important role in design.

The painting shows the continuous repetition of the same object as the main element, maintaining the same appearance without changing shape or color. While the organization is a bit confusing, the repetition enhances the overall content.

6.Movement

The sculpture uses lines to convey a sense of fluidity throughout the piece, suggesting a dynamic quality. It flows along the stage, encapsulating the tension and emotions of the resulting creative movement.

The image in the design shows people holding hands, forming a circular spiral. The lines give the whole composition a sense of fluidity. It extends into adjacent lines, and the repetition of the action suggests a dynamic effect.

7.Harmony & Unity:

It gives us a sense of competition between the elements, using different objects to represent the same theme, style, and psychological response, and makes it visually appealing. Consistency refers to the state in which all elements are balanced; cooperation and solidarity go hand in hand, but they have different purposes. Only when the two are combined does the image become balanced.

This image shows musical instruments, all in the same category, that have a unified style. The top is a warm red, and the bottom is a cold blue, indicating different states. This creates a very harmonious and unified composition, where the elements complement each other and harmonize.

8. Symbols:
Symbols are divided into graphic symbols and abstract symbols, each of which has a corresponding representation and symbol. These symbols are defined by their shape and form, which creates a complex problem. Symbols are an effective way of conveying information.

This symbol represents the internet literally and figuratively. With this symbol we can quickly understand the meaning of what we want to teach. It is presented in familiar formats and graphics, making complex concepts simple. Apparently, the symbol represents the idea of the Internet.

9.Word & Image:

Images of any kind are powerful communication tools. They can build relationships with customers, audiences, brands, and others, and they can be effective communication tools. Text and images are two different mediums; in design, they can stand alone, but only when the right text is paired with the right image can it convey something special.

This is a photograph of a sunset, which combines text and images. The images are brightly colored and displayed as a text background. The main color is fire, which corresponds to the sunflower symbol. The red and white color scheme harmonizes and works well for highlighting images and text, building relationships, and highlighting key points.

4.PRACTISE

I found a movie poster photo from pinterest.

title:Joker poster
Year:2024
Size:unknown
Medium:movie

The Reason Why I Selected This Design Work?

When I first saw this poster, I was drawn to the different colors. The stark color contrast further underscores the social issues the film addresses.

This poster has a great contrast between light and dark areas, and there seems to be a bit of light leaking through it.
Emphasize the personality of the main character and the theme of the poster.
Even when contradictions are apparent, the basic idea of a balanced design had been destroyed.
The images of the characters in the movie posters represent the darkness and social injustice of the society.
The uppercase letters stand out and emphasize the character's name, while the lowercase letters add meaning and make the image more complete.
The Joker character stands out against a black background, and his appearance is attractive. The yellow dress stands out against the pale green background. The resulting light forms a linear pattern that appears larger. The two figures in the background do not break the balance. But it fits the theme well and further reinforces the character of the main character.(173words)

My Observation:

The Joker poster focuses on Arthur, a troubled comedian whose life descends into chaos and leads him down a path of mental breakdown. In Gotham City, he commits heinous crimes and eventually becomes Batman’s nemesis, “The Joker.”
  • The Joker: As the main character, she is the focal point of the entire poster, with her red dress, grotesque features and green hair creating a stark contrast.
  • Beam of Light: It extends downward from the top edge of the ribbon, with a slight curve in the shape of a ribbon, it has a certain degree of expansion.

Analysis:

  • Contrast:
The Joker's red suit, green hair, black eyes, and yellow-green background create a great contrast, highlighting the main character and emphasizing the dark atmosphere depicted.
  • Emphasis:
In the poster, the Joker’s face and bright red costume are the focus. This clearly shows the theme of darkness in the film and darkness in the character.

  • Balance:
A downward beam of light creates a symmetrical effect. While the competition is fierce, there is a lot of competition. In addition, the text gives a symmetrical effect to the black background, enhancing the corresponding background color.

  • Movement:
The light source works like this, extending from the right side of the poster to the center, giving the poster a grainy, gray feel. The light curve actually reflects the average condition.

  • Harmony & Unity:
The Joker, in my opinion, is beautiful and funny. With his great build and color combination, for example, the representation of his big nose is different from the rest of the poster and makes him stand out. The colors are amazing, with great colors and amazing contrasts.
  • Symbol:
In a circle of visual symbols, the image of the Joker himself stands as a negative symbol in the public consciousness. In terms of aesthetics, the English script for "Joker" is fine and the subtitles are quite simple, making it easy to understand what is happening.

  • Word & Image:
As for typography, the Mongolian language is so big that the English language is called "Joker" or the press is called the city manager. At the same time, according to the main text, it goes to the line "EARTH IS GREEN", which is a picture of the Joker. If you want to buy a house, buy a house, you have to eat a house...

5.FEEDBACK

Week 1 :During the first week, Mr. Zhou gave us class guidelines, assignment rules, how to create an online portfolio, and how to grade.

Week 2 : This week, we held a virtual Q&A session. I shared my thoughts with my teacher and he had an answer. The new option is good, but it requires more screws. In addition, I was encouraged to provide a summary of the findings and evaluate the design principles.

6.MY REFLECTION
During the process of learning Task 1, I gained a great understanding of various design considerations and understood the importance of design principles. This principle directly affects the visual impact of the entire design work. By examining significant examples and analyzing them step by step, I gained a thorough understanding of design principles. I hope to apply these principles to future design projects.
