Project:

In this project, we need to choose one of the following groups to create the audio. This audio needs to be presented in a first-person narrative style, allowing the audience to use their imagination through the audio to understand what is happening.

The available options are as follows:

  • Wild animals + background
  • Daily life + background
  • Urban + transportation + outdoor atmosphere
  • Industrial and electronic sound effects + background
  • Weather + Background
  • Market + rural atmosphere + background

My initial choices did not fully align with the following relationships, so I revised the script and ultimately decided on "market + rural atmosphere + background" to create the following plot.

Then, based on my plot, I wrote down the sounds I needed under each part of the plot, and then searched for these sounds I needed in freesound.

After finding all the sound effects, I imported the file into Adobe Audition and began to arrange it according to the storyline. First of all, I put in the background sound and the sound of opening and closing the door that I found from free sound, and used a parametric equalizer to enhance its treble. Then, I added the chirping of crickets, the croaking of frogs, or the barking of dogs and so on to the first scene. Then, one slowly enters the market. The sounds of the market gradually emerge, giving a sense of approaching from afar. I also added reverb to the frog's voice, giving it an echo feel.

In the second act, the protagonist slowly walks into the market. As the sounds of the market grow louder, the protagonist slowly walks into the market. I turned down the volume first because the market should be approaching slowly. Then, following my footsteps, as I gradually approached the market, my footsteps gradually weakened. I kept the sounds of the market unchanged because they had been surrounding us all along. Then I added the bell of a bicycle near me, making it feel like it was passing by. I also added the sounds of vendors, which gradually drew closer from afar. So the sound images of the bicycles and the hawking passing by were adjusted, and the volume was also adjusted. Slowly, the footsteps stopped at one point.

In the third act, the protagonist walks into the market and gradually stops with the sound of footsteps. I want to express that he has reached the place for shopping. Then I added the sounds of the refrigerator opening and closing, as well as the sound of holding a bottle. Here, it means that he has taken out the drink he wants to buy from the refrigerator. After that, I added the sound of coins, just like counting coins to pay (but at first I wanted to use mobile payment and the sound of successful payment here, but I thought that in rural markets, more people still prefer to use cash, so I changed mobile payment to the sound of coins). Then, in order to make this part more obvious, I lowered the voice of the market to highlight the content I wanted to express.

In the fourth act, the protagonist steps out of the market. Following the footsteps, the lively sounds of the market gradually fade away. Then I make changes to the audio-visual. The effect I want to create is that the sound gradually disappears from the left channel, giving a sense of distance. Then, slowly returning to the tranquility of the countryside, walking on the pebble path, there were the chirping of crickets and the croaking of frogs. Then, the footsteps gradually became smaller and came to a stop.

In the fifth act (the final act), the protagonist's steps stopped. I added the sound of rummaging through keys, opening the door with the key, and then the ambient sound disappeared when closing the door. After that, I put on slippers and entered the room. Then I added the sound of opening the chair and sitting down, as well as rummaging through the plastic bag on the table. Finally, I added the sound of opening the cap of the drink I bought. Finally, there was an exclamation, and the entire sound effect came to an end.

Final Project 2:

REFLECTION

Experience

In this project, I designed a complete spatial audio experience against the backdrop of a rural night market. The story tells of a character who leaves home to buy drinks at a nearby market and then goes back home. I planned the sound effects that needed to be used from beginning to end, and then downloaded the required sound effects from many sound effect websites.
When making the audio, I imagine myself in this sound effect, making myself the center, and then the sound unfolds around me. In this way, there will be changes in the volume of the sound.

Observation

Through this project, I discovered that environmental sounds play a significant role in creating an immersive experience. Even simple sounds, such as the chirping of crickets, the sound of the wind and the barking of dogs in the distance, can make the scene feel more realistic. I also noticed that spatial transformation is very important in storytelling. For instance, as the character approaches, the market's voice gradually grows louder, and the audience can understand the change in position without any visual information.
Then I also found that not all audio clips require character dialogues to clearly explain the story unfolding in the scene. One can tell that the protagonist has left home through the sound of opening and closing doors, and through the contrast between quietness and noise, one can know that the protagonist has entered the market from a quiet environment, etc.

Research

Before making the project, I combined the software application that Mr. Sun taught us. I have learned that background sounds can create the atmosphere of a location, while action sounds can help characters interact with objects and Spaces.

I also learned about the concept of spatial audio and how to make the audience notice different changes. In my project, I applied this idea by creating clear transitions between indoor and outdoor Spaces as well as between the quiet countryside and the bustling market. This helps to enhance the sense of movement and position of the entire story.
