Task 3 - Type Expression and Application
Proposal
In Task Three, we are required to design the font based on three options that
interest you.
-
Create a font designed to solve the larger problems/partial solutions in
the field you are interested in.
- Explore the existing fonts in the area of interest.
- Experimental design
Based on the above three different font design methods, I submitted a PPT
proposal related to the theme. The following is my proposal.

by JIAYUE SUN
After the presentation in the 9th week, I chose the third idea. Since my
minor expertise is immersive design, I wanted to design fonts that have a
stronger sense of technology and futuricity.
Research/Collect reference materials:
I search for some letters on tech items and fonts on tech exhibition posters
on the Internet as my visual reference photos.
Sketch:
Based on the letter design, I simplified the sketch of the two letters, but
later did not choose this font.
Digitalization:
I put my ideas in Adobe Illustrate for digital design. I first drew them
with rectangles, then sketched the general outline with the pen tool, and
finally modified them bit by bit.
The following is my first attempt at digitizing capital letters:
In the tenth week's feedback, my husband told me that my design was okay,
but there were issues with font symmetry, the thickness of the lines, and
the size of the letters should be basically the same and on the same
horizontal line.
Capital and lowercase letters
I began to look for fonts similar to mine as my reference and kept each
letter on the same horizontal line. After completing this task, I began to
design my lowercase letters. I'll proceed step by step.

Number
During the design process, I also encountered many problems and kept making
corresponding improvements in order to achieve the desired effect Make many
different attempts.
To create fonts, I use a software called "Font Forge" to import my fonts.
1.Import the Font from Illustrator into Font Forge
After determining all the case, numbers and punctuation marks, I entered
Font Forge to import my letters, mainly referring to the relevant posts
provided by Mr. Vinod for design and development.
First, I used the resource export tool to export the letters in SVG format.
I put the exported file in a fixed folder, and then I imported each letter
into Font Forge. I used the "Elements" > "Transform" > "Move and
Scale" tools to adjust the overall size and position according to the height
of the capital letters and the height of the × letters.

2. Character spacing
I adjusted the character spacing of my letters:
Font presentation:
Before starting the design, I choose the colors I want to use as my color
palette.
I made many attempts and finally chose what I thought was quite good for the
design.

Font application:
In font design, my fonts have a futuristic feel. My minor specialty is
immersive design, so I add more technological elements to the fonts and
use more contrasting colors, which might reflect a sense of technology.
So my applications are mainly applied in the field of technology, such
as technology advertisements, the mysterious display of VR glasses and
cards, as well as posters, clothes, etc

FEED BACK
Week 8:
In the eighth week, we had a class first. First, the teacher gave the final
comment on the task2 assignment that we needed to submit. There was a
problem with the color of my fox tail. The color I used was black. The
relevant colors on my color card should be used for the design.
WEEK 9:
This week, we presented the idea of 3 in the form of a PPT to show the
gentleman. Then, we selected a font from it and started making it. I chose
one that has a futuristic feel and is in line with my minor major. The next
step is to digitize it.
WEEK 10
In class, the teacher checked the relevant fonts of my capital letters and
then gave me suggestions. I needed to consider where these fonts were to be
used, what they were to be placed on, and what had been changed. Then I
checked my homework for the teacher. The teacher said my homework was okay
and I could start to design lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.
WEEK 11
This week, in the last class, the teacher gave us suggestions using capital
letters. In this class, we designed lowercase letters, numbers and
punctuation marks. The teacher suggested to me that the distance and size
between the letters should be the same and need to be changed.
REFLECTION:
Experience :
Task Three was my first attempt to design a complete font on my own. It
was a huge challenge for me. From the initial design PPT to the final
creation of my own complete font, we first used AI software for the
design. When creating the font, my font often couldn't keep the thickness
consistent, so I made many adjustments. Then I designed the font in
FontForge and exported it. During this process, there was a problem with
my font, so I readjusted it. Finally, I successfully mastered this
software and successfully exported the font.
Observation
When designing this font, I mainly looked at fonts with a strong
futuristic feel, which were mostly used in VR and AR glasses. There were
also some tech companies that did not directly highlight the style of the
font, and I made changes to them.
Discovery
I find that it is a very difficult thing to truly create a font with
distinctive features. We need to search for relevant materials from
different places, make multiple attempts, and then think about in what
situations it can be used, so as to have a more intuitive understanding of
the application of the font.
FURTHER READING:
It expresses clear concepts in an elegant form and color. In graphic design,
the contrast between bold and thin fonts can bring people a dynamic visual
experience.
To achieve the expected effect, it is necessary to have a strong visual impact
and a unique presence. It can be achieved through ingenious layout or
materials. The experience of visual impact and the inner elegance can never be
equated with mere visual effects.
