LECTURE

The content is all displayed in Task 1

Task 2A
In this exercise, we need to explore and design our own font, and then create artworks that are related to things we like or our personality.

  • The canvas size is 1024 pixels x 1024 pixels
  • Choose your name, nickname or pen name to create artworks
  • Explore your personal identity and obtain a keyword that represents you
  • Limit the graphic elements and ensure their readability and interchangeability
  • This work will be used as a key accessory for Mission 2(B)In order to have a more
accurate understanding of ourselves, we first made mind maps related to ourselves.

    Fig 1.1 Mind map(2025/5/18)

I use my name "Sun Jiayue" to create my works. Here are some references I found on pinterest.
    Fig 1.2 Mood Board(2025/5/18)

I digitally design the font I want to design through the tablet.

Because I myself like foxes very much, the key words I chose are foxes and dreams.

At the beginning, I designed two fonts. One was based on Fox, and the other was based on Dream. However, the gentleman gave me suggestions and finally chose the fox as the key word for my design.

    Sketch:
    Fig 2.1 Sketch(2025 5/19)

The following is the final sketch I completed after continuous attempts and research. My name is included in it.

    Font digitization:
    Fig 3.1 First digitization (2025/5/22)

In class, I showed Mr. Vinod my designed font and gave suggestions, saying that my font couldn't understand its meaning and my name shouldn't be sorted like this. It should be arranged in the way of "J i A y u e".

Moreover, my font lacks particularity and is too plain. It needs to be reprocessed and redesigned.

    Fig 3.2 The second digitalization(2025/5/23)

I changed the positions of my letters, but still didn't achieve the effect I wanted. I also tried other effects and reduced the number of letters, but I was still not satisfied.

So I made another change. I designed the fox element. I saw that both "J" and "y" had a shape like a small tail, so I added a style more like a small tail to my font.

This is the final digital result that I made after multiple designs and changes:

    Color application:

I chose the fox as my key word, so I made my selection based on the color of the fox's fur. I used Colour Hunt and Adobe Color to look for color combinations, mainly the color choices of orange and yellow, because these colors are more in line with the colors of foxes.

    Fig 4.1 Fox photo(2025/5/29)

I selected from two color palettes and chose one with a more distinct color, where the difference between dark and light colors was significant.

So this is the color I finally chose.

    Key artistic works animation:

For the design of animations, I use Adobe After Effects to edit my design animations.

    Task 2B - Collatera

    Collateral

The following is the website link for my reference:
When I was choosing collateral, the first thing I considered was the practicality of the item, something that could be used in daily life. So in the end, I chose water cups, MEDALS and handbags.
I did all the design using Adobe Photoshop and used illustrate to prepare the relevant patterns for the layout.

    Accessory 1: Cup

I searched online and selected the items I wanted to design. I used brown as my background color, changed the color of the cup itself to a light color, and then designed with orange words.

Referring to the picture on the left, I made a similar layout design for my font and applied it to my design.

    Final product:

    Accessory 2: Badge

I searched for pictures of the badges online, used Adobe Photoshop to change the background of the badges to black, and used my "J" as a logo for the design.

    Final design work:

    Accessory 3: Paper bags

I search for relevant pictures online and choose the most suitable one for design.
I add the patterns and design patterns used in the cup.

Identity expansion and Instagram Tile design:

    One's own black-and-white photo:

Fig 7.7 Black and white photo design(2025/6/4)

I wrapped the font around me and designed it with a "y" at the ear area, which is related to the keywords I chose.

    Mode extension:
At the beginning, there were no patterns related to the keywords I chose. Under the suggestions given by the gentleman, I added tails as my design elements and designed these tails many times.

    First attempt:

    Fig 7.9Try 1(2025/6/4)

    Fig 7.10 try2(2025/6/4)
However, both of these designs have a very fatal mistake. I shouldn't have black in them because these two colors are not in the color palette I chose. Using black would have been particularly eye-catching, resulting in the lack of central content.

    Final Design

The following is my first unmodified Instagram feed layout design:

    Adjustment:
In class, the teacher checked my homework for me and said that there was a problem with the colors in the lower left and lower right corners of mine. I needed to use the colors on the color palette, so I made adjustments.

    FEEDBACK:

    Week 4:

This week, the gentleman commented on our poster. The problem with my poster was that the background was too messy, which made the font unclear. So after I made some modifications, the gentleman introduced the relevant tasks of Project One to us.

    Week 5:

This week, Mr. Zhou commented on the brand logo we made and gave reasonable suggestions. Mine was due to the lack of relevant font comparison and reference font photos, so I needed to find relevant photos. Then he also talked about the next task and provided relevant guidance.

    Week 6:

This week during our online class, the sir commented on our homework and gave us suggestions. My problem was that I couldn't directly read the meaning of the characters, so I reformatted and designed the font, and rechecked it for the sir. He also checked the color and said that my color was okay.

    Week 7:

This week, we submitted the 9-square grid we designed. My husband commented on my design, saying that my brand design was not good and needed improvement. He also gave me personal guidance on my design, letting me know how to design and allowing me to use relevant items for the design, so as to reflect the theme of my design.

    REFLECTIONS:

    Experience

I was very interested in this task. However, at the beginning of the design, there was a problem with my design direction and I couldn't find a suitable method to design a design that satisfied me. But after attending classes and communicating with Mr. Vinod and his friends, I received a lot of useful and valuable suggestions, which made me more and more interested in the subsequent design. And it is progressing very fast.

    Observation

During the design process, I read a large number of books and viewed a large number of photos to look for the parts related to my design and analyze how to incorporate them. Through these, I learned a lot of knowledge about design, such as color matching, design styles, and the places where they are used.

    Discoveries

In this design, I found that creating a perfect design work is not an easy task. It requires not only the design itself but also an understanding of the font, as well as more observation of the objects around, the content to be conveyed, and the brand image that can be provided for the brand. A lot of materials and photos are needed for in-depth research and discussion.

    Further reading:

The theatre produces six new works every year, so the brand design must be flexible enough while maintaining consistency. And this poster also includes posters, program lists, and other promotional materials, and uses ready-made images, montage and photo illustrations, as well as the shape of A resembling a spotlight, as the logo of the Atlantic Theatre.

The brand logo, with its bright green, blue and white colors, is vivid and powerful, perfectly interpreting the spirit of the Atlantic Theatre and its performances.
